We are a diverse community of parents, children, and staff working together to provide an affordable Montessori school where children will be prepared to meet the academic, social and moral challenges ahead of them and grow in a loving relationship with God through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

A Brief History of the School

Over three decades ago, a small group of parents desired a school for their children where the teachers would treat the students respectfully, as human beings loved by God, as well as nurturing them academically. Christian Family Montessori School opened in September of 1981 with 12 students, meeting in the living room of Catherine and Charley Maresca. Rebekah Rojcewicz was their teacher, called to our school from her study in Rome with Sofia Cavalletti, initiator of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

In March 1982 CFMS made its home at St. James Catholic Church in Mt. Rainier, MD where it would remain for nearly 30 years. During those years the school added a second Primary class and two Elementary classes serving children from age 2 1/2 through 12 year olds in the sixth grade.

In June 2012 CFMS moved to its present home located at St. Paul's Rock Creek Episcopal Parish surrounded by the beautiful grounds of the historic Rock Creek Church Cemetery. As the school celebrated its 30th year, it also was able to offer both Traditional and All-Day Primary Montessori programs to provide various scheduling options for families including half-day and full-day classes between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The two Elementary classes have a full school day from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with the option of Elementary Extended care until 6:00 p.m.

Through its growth and in various locations, the school has maintained its founding vision of providing an education that nourishes children in body, mind, and spirit. Since its opening, CFMS has offered financial assistance in an effort to serve an economically diverse community of families.
